On May 22, 2026, Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Japan, Atadurdy Bayramov, held a meeting with former Prime Minister of Japan and head of the Liberal Democratic Party's Growth Strategy Headquarters, Fumio Kishida, the Embassy of Turkmenistan reported. During the meeting, the parties discussed the development of political, inter-parliamentary and inter-party relations, as well as economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Turkmenistan and Japan. Special emphasis was placed on the historic meeting between the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Fumio Kishida, which took place in September 2022 during a visit to Japan to attend mourning ceremonies held in connection with the death of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The telephone conversations that Kishida held with the President of Turkmenistan during his tenure as Prime Minister in 2022–2024 were recalled warmly, and the Turkmen side's commitment to developing relations with Japan was underscored. In addition, the meeting addressed specific avenues for the further development of Turkmen-Japanese political, inter-parliamentary and party cooperation, matters of support for Japanese companies participating in major projects in the oil and gas and chemical industries, as well as the strengthening of economic interaction between the two countries.
